What is Stray Blade?

Legends tell of Acrea the Lost Valley, a wild and overgrown place but unmistakably powerful. You found this forgotten land yet died. Time passes, and miraculously you are brought back to life. The price you pay: You are bound to this land.

Stray Blade is an upcoming brand new action RPG experience from Point Blank Games, an indie game development studio based in Berlin, Germany. It tells the tale of the Valley of Acrea, a land veiled from prying eyes, shrouded in mystery and brimming with a strange power. In Stray Blade, you play a rogue Adventurer that meets their end soon after arriving in this foreign land. A twist of fate brings you back to the land of the living and thrusts you into action as the war-torn Acrea takes its hold on you, binding you with its strange powers and a dark secret to uncover.

Stray Blade is a game that tasks you with proving yourself by mastering intense combat while exploring the ruins of a mysterious civilization. As the Adventurer, you must carve a path through brutal encounters with invaders looking to plunder the riches of Acrea, local monstrous fauna defending the land, as well as God-kings and ancient rulers that tore the land asunder in times past. On your journey, you are accompanied by a strange humanoid/wolf hybrid creature named Boji and the flourishing bond between you two sets the stage for the grand adventure ahead.

Featuring a beautiful, handcrafted world full of perils and intrigue, Stray Blade is reminiscent of acclaimed titles in the same genre such as the Darksiders series and Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. Played from a third person perspective, a strong emphasis on a hyper-responsive combat system is central to the gameplay experience, allowing players to fully control the flow of battle with quick reactions and precise attacks. Stray Blade's combat is melee-centric and the Adventurer must utilize everything from swords, spears, hammers and shields to overcome ever-more-challenging opponents. A deep Skill Tree punctuates its equipment system, with players being able to progress their mastery of each weapon through continued use while an extensive Crafting mechanic allows for the creation of better armaments and defensive gear from blueprints scavenged form the land and through defeating its hostile denizens.

Change is another central theme in Stray Blade that promises to offer a unique experience depending on your actions. Where every victory leaves a mark in the land and time moves forward even when you perish in battle, Stray Blade offers an ever-changing world that is influenced by your actions. Revisiting places of former victory can provide a unique insight into your next objective after performing certain actions or completely crush you with an all-new challenge brought about by your growing power and influence on the world. Discover new avenues in your journey as you better yourself, gain new skills and abilities, and improve your arsenal. Change is an inevitable force in Acrea and it is up to the Adventurer and his trusty Companion to bring about change and restore peace in the valley, or usher in war and death.

Stray Blade is an action RPG that employs a semi-open world formula featuring vast regions with varying environments and puzzles to solve. Its melee-centric combat combined with exploration, a sense of discovery and immersion, along with its beautiful handcrafted visuals and a compelling world to discover creates an adventure that is sure to entice fans of the genre.

• The Untold Story — Embark on an unforgettable journey and discover the story of Acrea and its ancient legacy. Discover the whole history that turned the peaceful valley into a place of war and death. Use this knowledge to destroy the relics of the past and restore peace in the war-torn valley. Discover Acrea and its vast regions, traverse snowy mountains, overgrown ruins, towering monuments, winding cave systems and more as you leave your mark on the world.
• Hyper-responsive Combat System — Vanquish your foes with precision strikes and quick reaction as you go blade-to-blade against tougher and tougher challenges. Stray Blade features weighty combat that rewards skillful play and patience, requiring players to block, parry, dodge, and attack with deliberation to remain triumphant.
• Master a Deadly Arsenal — Wield a wide array of armaments ranging from swords, maces, scythes, polearms, warhammers and shields. There are over 30 weapons in Stray Blade and each weapon has its own Mastery stat to progress, unlocking special attacks, finishers and other moves the more you use them. Create a build around your favorite weapons and improve your proficiency to take on the biggest, baddest opponents.
• Fight Powerful Foes and Epic Bosses — Acrea is a land ravaged by war and fraught with peril. On your journey, you will face other warriors and explorers, fierce knights and soldiers of ancient orders, weary locals defending their territory, as well as deadly wildlife enraged by tresspassers and the war in the land. Challenge the God-Kings who brought the land to ruin. Destroy their legacy and harness their powers to uncover the mysteries of Acrea.
• It's Dangrous to Go Alone — Strengthen your bond with Boji, the strange diminutive creature known as a Xhinnon Wolf. Boji is a craftsman and a scholar who is well-versed in the Acrean Magical Arts. Boji has his own Skill Tree and as you deepen your frienship with him, he will not only revive you when you fall in battle, but will also assist in combat, distracting opponents by pouncing on them or hitting them with staggering spells, giving you a chance to perform powerful back stabs to gain the upper hand. As you unlock more abilities for Boji, he will be able to use powerful magic to obliterate your foes in tandem with your melee offensive. Boji's magical prowess is also the key to uncovering the mysteries of Acrea, unlocking sealed doors and pathways to various temples and ruins, and solving ancient puzzles.
• Craft Powerful Equipment — Throughout your journey, you will come across various blueprints for ancient Acrean gear including consumables, weapons and armor. Gather the appropriate materials and bring Boji to a forge to to make use of his other expertise to craft and upgrade your equipment. Find an Arcane Forge, special facilities formerly used by the ancient civilization of Acrea and utilize them to craft the most powerful weaponry, armor and more.
• Encounter Various Factions — As you make your way through Acrea and uncover its mysteries, you may catch the attention of various groups and organizations each with their own motives and schemes. Some of these may be friendly, but many will oppose you and prove themselves as obstacles in your path. Your interactions with these Factions will have a profound effect on Acrea and each Faction will have their own goals that can change depending on your choices.

The Magical Valley of Acrea

Acrea is a beautiful but dangerous place with many different regions. Each region presents a varied environment and its own hazards. Players will traverse snowcapped mountains, vast arid canyons, ancient overgrown ruins and winding cave systems on their journey of discovery. 

Acrea was once home to an ancient civilization known as the Elessine, a race of powerful giants. Traces of their fallen civillization can still be seen in the scale and architecture of their temples that towered over the quiet settlements of the native Acreans. The Elessine possessed knowledge of the legendary power that rests within Acrea, knowledge lost to time and obscured from the outside world by the erection of the barrier. Now that the veil has been lifted, powerful human factions of varying intent and motives are scouring the land in search of this knowledge and power. As the ill-fated adventurer bound to this magical valley, you must clash swords with these factions in a race to uncover the secrets of the Elessine and unravel the legend of Acrea.

Ever-looming Threats

Now that the Acrean barrier has been destroyed, the Valley has become a free-for-all for aspiring treasure hunters and pillagers alike. In the valley, you will come across many human Factions. These are groups and organizations with their own goals and ideals that have invaded the Valley hoping to claim the land and its many mysteries, as well as using whatever they find to win an ongoing war in the outside world.

These Factions will include marauding parties, fanatical knights, scheming bandits and more. These will form the base of obstacles you will face on your journey and none of them will be easy to beat, requiring you to adapt to various strategies and ensure you have the best equipment and skills.

Aside from the invaders, you will also have to deal with the local fauna. While many of these are peaceful, some are ferocious and territorial, and will not think twice about tearing tresspassers to their lands apart limb from limb. The devs draw inspiration from real animals associated with a creature's intended behavior while creating a truly unique design that befits the theme of Acrea. This is evident in the design of the Irakka, a boar-like Acrean animal that has sharp tusks and an aggressive demeanor with regards to threats to protecting its pack.

Combat Basics

Combat in Stray Blade is centered around fast-paced melee skirmishes that demand precision and tight reflexes. The adventurer is a competent fighter who is continually learning, but so are your opponents. Attacks are weighty and deliberate with vastly different attack styles and combos depending on your weapon choice. A slew of different weapons provide players with different ways to engage enemies in combat from swift dual wielding flurries, hefty two-handed pummeling blows, piercing rapier strikes with fancy footwork to a balanced offense and defense with a sword and shield. Wield up to two sets of weapons and switch between them seamlessly in combat to further diversify your builds according to your playstyle.

Stray Blade employs an 8-dimensional dodging system that emphasizes fluid movement to get the better of enemy combatants.

Players can also utilize the parry system to survive deadly blows by anticipating enemy attacks. Well-timed parries can leave opponents vulnerable to a counterattack. Throw your opponents off-balance and answer their attacks with a powerful riposte move to quickly turn the tide of battle. The basics of combat are a constant throughout Stray Blade. Master them to overcome the biggest challenges in your path.

Weapon Mastery

Discover and craft an arsenal of 30 weapons, each with their own unique characteristics and movesets. As you travel the Valley of Acrea, you will come across blueprints for these weapons. Take these and the appropriate materials to a Forge and have your companion Boji guide you in crafting your next tool of destruction. 

To circumvent the feeling of disappointment when finding a weapon that is inferior to the one you already have, Point Blank Games devised a progression mechanic that allows for the Mastery of all weapons. The more you use each weapon, its Mastery level goes up, unlocking various paths in the Skill Tree and allowing you the opportunity to play a lot of different weapons while progressing your character instead of being stuck in a single playstyle that requires you to lose all progression when you wish to switch. After mastering a new weapon, you can always go back to your favorite ones without consequence.

Weapon Mastery is the key to unlocking your weapon's full potential, granting access to special attacks and powerful finishers to futher cement your victory over your adversaries.

An Ever Changing World

In Stray Blade, time is always moving forward and with time comes change. This extends to the actions you perform and your interactions with the denizens of Acrea. As you venture deeper into the Valley following the traces left by the Elessine, you may discover that places of former victory such as a bandit camp may now be overrun with local wildlife or another Faction may have moved in, in an attempt to expand their expedition and gain hold of the surrounding regions.

More is yet to be revealed about the extent and scale of changes you can trigger in the world of Stray Blade.

A Magical Companion

Boji the Xhinnon Wolf is your ever persistent companion throughout Stray Blade. Boji is primarily a craftsman who is always in the pursuit of honing his craft and learning new recipes and techniques. However, he is also a scholar of ancient Acrean Magic and will assist you in various ways in combat.

Boji has his own Skill Tree and gains skill points by finding lost Elessine knowledge scattered throughout the valley. He is autonomous in combat and will decide on his own when to assist. His combat support is akin to Atreus' role in 2018's God of War.

Depending on his progression, Boji can use several abilities including Feral Pounce in which he latches onto an enemy combatant, preventing them from attacking and giving you some breathing room, and Mystical Bewilderment in which he teleports into combat to fire a beam of magical light at an opponent, stunning them and rendering them vulnerable to a powerful backstab. As your bond grows with Boji, he will even resurrect you when you fall in battle and he will gain access to more devastating spells that can blast enemies away, mess with their formations and allow you multiple ways to approach combat.

Boji's craftsmanship is also central to your progression as he will craft or guide you in crafting all of your gear, ranging from simple healing consumables, to robust armor pieces and the almighty Arcane Weapons. He can also craft Runes that grant various abilities to your equipment. Boji and his bond with the Adventurer is a crucial part of the journey, and only with his help can you uncover the mysteries of Acrea, solving its many puzzles and working the magical mechanisms that block your path in its ruins and temples.

Harness the Power of the God-Kings

The biggest Boss encounters in Stray Blade will come in the form of the powerful God-Kings that ruled the land and led to its ruin. These rulers have an inexplicable command of the elements and will provide the biggest challenges and the means to further progress in Stray Blade.

Upon their defeat, players will gain the power of each God-King, allowing them to wield the same abilities which have applications in both combat and exploration. These abilities have varying effects from teleportation, heavy AoE effects and crowd control to add to your growing list of skills. Furthermore, each power you unlock will allow you to traverse into the further reaches of Acrea by creating elemental reactions in the environment and opening or revealing previously blocked pathways in a manner similar to Metroidvania or Zelda titles.
